JCDA Signs Final Papers to Own Historic John Sevier Building
The Johnson City Development Authority has signed final papers to purchase the historic John Sevier Building in downtown Johnson City.
A press conference was held Monday to celebrate the end to a nearly year long process that came to a completion last Thursday when officials signed the final papers to make things official. This now helps the JCDA move forward with revitalization of the nearly century old building.
“We’re excited about the opportunity to take care of the current residents to rebuild a new housing project for them, they deserve it,” said Robert Williams, Chairman of the JCDA. “It gives us an opportunity to restore this beautiful structure in downtown Johnson City.”
The JCDA will now seek out developers interested in building new housing, awarding the developer with the best plan for the current tenants. Following completion of that plan, Williams says they would work to restore the building with a mix-use strategy, that could include adding retail stores, a restaurant with a rooftop bar, and high end apartments.
Negotiations and construction for the new housing is anticipated to take approximately two years.
