I-81 Improvement Fund Remains Strong, Despite COVID-19 Pandemic

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, a fund established for I-81 improvements in Virginia remains strong. In 2019, the Virginia General Assembly passed a bill that would set up a fund where money generated by a regional gas tax would be spend on two billion dollars worth of improvements to I-81. The I-81 fund remains relatively safe and even finished the year, having generated more than 69 million dollars…almost 15 million more than expected, even though there was a 64 percent drop in traffic of all vehicle types using Virginia roadways at the beginning of the pandemic
