UPDATE: Bristol man held in Arizona since 2015 for murder of college student has ninth trial date set

A Bristol, Virginia man extradited to Arizona and charged with the 1978 murder of a 21-year-old college student has yet another trial date set.

Edward Meinhold has eight previous trials postponed since he was arrested five years ago in connection with the murder of Susan Schmidt. Prosecutors said physical evidence collected the at scene along with new DNA technology linked Meinhold to the 37-year cold case.

Meinhold’s new trial date is set for January 26, according to Maricopa County, Arizona Criminal Court.

State attorneys said Meinhold, who was 17 at the time of the woman’s death, shot Schmidt at point-blank range in her car.
