Preliminary FAA report issued on plane crash near Honor Flight benefit

A preliminary report from the Federal Aviation Administration says a plane making a landing for a benefit Honor Flight event near Jonesborough went into the woods for unknown reasons.

The FAA incident statement issued Monday says the two people on board the 1967 Cessna on Saturday were seriously injured. A Sheriff’s Office statement said eyewitnesses told officers the plane seemed to gain altitude as it started its landing on the South runway of Kite Field then yawed left into a wooded area and crashed.

The unidentified pilot and passenger were taken to an area hospital and then the pilot was airlifted to another facility. According to FAA records, the plane is registered to a Greeneville, Tennessee resident.
