NEW: Crash on Interstate 26 sends police officer to hospital

A Northeast Tennessee police officer was injured following a crash Saturday morning on Interstate 26 near Gray.

Preliminary information received from law enforcement says the patrolman was on the scene of a crash on I-26 westbound near Exit 13 when his patrol cruiser was hit from behind while he was inside.

The officer was taken from the scene to a local medical center via helicopter for treatment of injuries. The name of the officer or the agency involved was not available.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
