ETSU utilizes “standardized patients” to train medical students in realistic scenarios
Many people believe that real-life experience in healthcare professions begins when a graduate is hired after college. East Tennessee State University is exhibiting how students gain bed-side manners and hospitality before even entering the workforce. The college utilizes “standardized patients” that act as real patients in real scenarios in order to give medical students experience in the field. ETSU says its standardized patient program is used across all five health science colleges to better train students in history taking and communication skills. This program gives medical students a safe environment to work through potentially emotional situations they will encounter with patients and their families in the workforce.
