UPDATE: Sullivan County commissioners’ request for restitution relief for convicted highway commissioner being withdrawn

A report from the Sullivan County Commission says a resolution requesting restitution relief for convicted highway commissioner Allen Pope is being withdrawn.
Two commissioners had submitted the petition that was being considered for a vote on second reading this month. That request would have been submitted to Criminal Court and asked the judge to accept the amount of money Pope has paid so far and consider the matter closed.
Pope was convicted in November 2010 on charges of official misconduct, private use of county equipment, and theft over $10,000 following a trial where prosecutors presented TBI evidence of Pope’s illegal activities during a water line project where private land work was performed. He was ordered to pay more than $96,000 in restitution.
