VA lawmakers considering firearm restrictions
Virginia state lawmakers are considering legislation that would put more restrictions on firearms. Virginia House Bill 217 would ban certain magazines and semi-automatic firearms and add restrictions on firearm ownership. Under the bill, the import, sale, manufacture, purchase, or transfer of an “assault firearm” would be prohibited. The bill defines an assault firearm as certain semi-automatic rifles or pistols that accept detachable magazines and have specific tactical features. The bill also bans the sale of magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Other provisions in the bill would restrict who can possess a firearm. That includes individuals who are subject to a restraining or protective order, users of controlled substances and individuals convicted of stalking, assault, or sexual battery. Strengthening of background checks is also included. House Bill 217 has passed the Virginia House of Delegates and is pending in the Senate. If both chambers agree on the bill and the governor signs, it would take effect on July 1.
