New TN law puts pressure on TSSAA for “transfer student” rule change
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed a bill into law that makes it easier for middle and high school athletes to play sports immediately after transferring schools. The law prohibits a public school from using public funds to have a membership with an association that regulates interscholastic athletics and prohibits a student from participating in an interscholastic athletic competition due to the student transferring no more than once from a school at which the student previously participated in an interscholastic athletic competition regulated by the association. The new law puts pressure on the TSSAA to change its transfer rules or risk public schools not being members of the association. The TSSAA says it will amend its rules at its next meeting in April.
