Mountain Mission School objecting to Rebel flag being brought to campus by opposing team
“…Symbols or behavior that contribute to division are not appropriate for our campus.” – Statement issued Mountain Mission this week
Some middle school students from Buchanan County have received death threats and their actions questioned on social media after a video clip of Hurley Middle School students waiving Confederate flags prior to the game with Mountain Mission School.
In a Facebook post, a statement from Mountain Mission said the imagery and symbols posted in the stands do not reflect the community we seek to build our students. Hosting students from the US and multiple countries around the world, Mountain Mission also said symbols that promote division are not appropriate on their grounds.
Hurley Middle and High students and faculty have long argued over the years that the Rebel flag is heritage. This will be the last year the flag will be seen at a Buchanan sporting event with Hurley being consolidated with two others to create Southern Gap High School that begins classes in the fall.
The video has received more than 1.1 million views on TikTok along with 11,000 comments.
