Religious impact on history at the root of American Heritage Act proposal
A bill has advanced out of the Tennessee Senate’s education committee that encourages educators to share the positive impacts of religion on American history.
Co-sponsored by Senator Rusty Crowe of Johnson City, the Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act would provide religious viewpoints to teachers and allow them to be displayed and discussed in the classroom.
The committee vote on the issue was 7 to 1 with Senator Raumesh Akbari of Memphis opposing the bill. “…I just think that our public schools are really not the place to push one religion over the other and I know that is not the stated intent of the bill but I think that’s what ends up being the result,” Akbari said.
The legislation was named in honor of social commentator Charlie Kirk who was assassinated during a speaking engagement in Utah in September. The bill will go to the Senate floor for discussion and a vote on Thursday.
