Domtar begins 30 day trial to improve quality of wastewater
Domtar Paper Co. began a 30-day trial Monday at its wastewater lagoon that the company hopes can improve the quality of treated wastewater it releases into the Holston River. Domtar sent a letter detailing it’s plans to the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Domtar plans to close the lagoon once it starts up a new “anaerobic digester” currently under construction and slated for completion in late 2026. Since reopening in early 2023 after converting to the use of fully recycled materials, Domtar’s plant has experienced challenges with its wastewater processes that include odors from the wastewater facility that have led to significant community complaints and a federal lawsuit against the company claiming nuisance and negligence. Domtar has acknowledged the odor issue, while deeming it harmless to the environment and community.
