Sheriff: Student unknowingly brought gun into North Carolina school

The parents of an Ashe County, North Carolina elementary school student are both criminally charged after their child discovered a gun placed in a pocket of their backpack.

Michael and Stephanie Zandiotis of West Jefferson were arrested and face one count of weapons on campus while Stephanie Zandiotis has an additional charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

A Sheriff’s Office investigation determined the student of Westwood Elementary was unaware that the gun was inside their backpack and had no criminal intent.
