VA pot legislation awaiting action from Gov. Spanberger
A retail recreational marijuana market could find its way to Virginia by next year. The recently passed legislation creates a framework that industry leaders say combats the illicit, unregulated marketplace they say is currently operating in the state. Since being passed by the Virginia General Assembly, legislation awaits action from Governor Abigail Spanberger. She has until April 13 to make a decision. If the bill is approved as is, retail sales of marijuana would begin January 1, 2027 and would be overseen by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority. That agency would start accepting license applications from cultivators, manufactures, and retailers starting later this year.
