Volunteers place flags at Mountain Home National Cemetery for Memorial Day
Hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday morning at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City to honor fallen service members by placing flags at gravesites ahead of Memorial Day. More than 18,000 gravesites received flags during the annual ceremony, with each marker representing a soldier who served the country across generations of conflict. Among the volunteers were members with the Sequoyah Council, Scouting America and Girl Scouts of the USA. The cemetery is the final resting place for veterans who served in conflicts ranging from the American Revolutionary War up to Operation Iraqi Freedom. This year marked the 75th annual flag placement ceremony, a tradition held every Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend.
