Creeper Trail on course for March 31 reopening

Related small businesses continue to struggle as parts of the Virginia Creeper Trail continue to have restricted access.

A report from the US Forest Service was sure to bring optimism for next year’s tourism plan as the agency formally announced the reopening of the complete 34 mile trail to bike, running, and walking traffic on March 31st.

Contractors are still making repairs along 17 miles of the route from Damascus to Whitetop Mountain with the help of a $240 million forest service contract to rebuild what Hurricane Helene took away in 2024.

An agency statement says the winter season will provide time for new and current portions of the trail to settle into place and observe new drainage systems as nature takes its course.

“…This extra time helps reduce long‑term maintenance costs (for the trail) and ensures a safer experience for cyclists, runners and families,” said a portion of the prepared Forest Service statement.
