Bond denied for man accused of Milligan University cycling accident
John Benfield, the man charged in the Aug. 19 crash that took the lives of two Milligan University cycling team members and injured several others, appeared in court Wednesday for a bond hearing. Judge Keith Bowers ruled that Benfield would not have his bond reinstated and that he would continue to be held at the Carter County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 18. 69 year old Benfield of NC, has been charged with two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of reckless aggravated assault by vehicle in relation to the crash. After his initial arrest, Benfield posted a $300,000 bond and returned to North Carolina, where he was arrested again days later for violating the terms of his release. According to the court documents, Benfield was asked to submit to a random drug test, which he failed.
