NTSB: Truck hit Milligan cyclists from rear, pushed through two-by-two teammates

A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report paints a harrowing picture of a deadly crash that took the lives of two Milligan University athletes and resulted in criminal charges for the truck driver.

The review released Tuesday says the vehicle driven by John Benfield overtook the pack of ten Milligan cycling team members who were two-by-two on US 19E from behind then continued through the entire team until coming to a stop.

The report said that stretch of the highway where the Milligan training run was taking place was a designated bicycle route by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Benfield is charged with vehicular homicide and remains in the Carter County Jail after a judge denied a second bond request last week.
