Voters in VA vote to enshrine reproductive rights into state constitution
Virginia voters have approved a landmark constitutional amendment protecting access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion. According to preliminary results from the Associated Press, the ballot measure passed on Tuesday with over sixty percent of the vote. The approved amendment establishes a constitutional right for individuals to make their own decisions regarding pregnancy, fertility, and abortion care, while shielding patients and medical providers from criminal prosecution. It still allows the state to regulate third-trimester abortions, except in cases where a physician determines the fetus is unviable or the mother’s life or health is at risk. Early results remain unofficial until certified by Virginia’s State Board of Elections.
