Doctor accused of raping patient reprimanded in 2021 for unprofessional conduct

The Johnson City doctor accused of raping a patient during an office visit was reprimanded four years ago for unprofessional conduct by boards of medicine in Virginia and Tennessee for his care of a pregnant patient.

The documents from the Tennessee Department of Health show Dr. Atif Atyia violated multiple provisions that authorize penalties for unprofessional conduct in 2020 for the treatment of a 20-year-old patient complaining of lower abdominal pain and was 28 weeks pregnant in the ER.

State examiners wrote Atyia never attempted a pelvic exam, failed to order a fetal heart monitor for the baby, and wrote down a fetal heart rate for a test never administered. The report said Atyia was with the patient for just 24 minutes then she was discharged.

Ten minutes after she left the hospital, the patient delivered her infant that died moments later while in the hospital parking lot. Atyia’s Virgnia license was suspended for three months then placed back in good standing after he completed a board-ordered course in obstetrics patient care.

Atyia, 68, posted bond Wednesday and was released. He will appear in court on June 16.
