I-81 southbound temporarily closed Wednesday evening after crash

The southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Smyth County were temporarily closed Wednesday evening following a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer. The crash happened just after 3:30 p.m. on I-81 near mile marker 52.7 between Marion and Rural Retreat. Virginia State Police reported traffic backups were approximately three miles before one of the lanes was reopened. A preliminary report says the driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the crash is under investigation.
