Bridge the gap: TDOT reopens both lanes of Erwin’s eastbound Interstate 26 bridge

Just weeks before the anniversary of Hurricane Helene, one of the bridges brought down by its record rainfall is now back to normal.

Department of Transportation Region 1 spokesperson Mark Nagi said both lanes of the Interstate 26 eastbound bridge in Erwin are open, ending months of one-route traffic that sometimes brought travelers to a slow stop.

Interstate 26 is now accessible at Jackson Love Drive in Erwin with the opening of the on ramp near that highway.

The agency has also announced I-26 westside should have its connector opened for drivers next month.
