Former Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark dead at 50

Former Appalachian State head football coach Shawn Clark died Sunday after he was admitted to a Florida hospital two weeks ago.
The 50-year-old Clark played for the Mountaineers in the 1990s and then got into coaching with stops at Eastern KY, Louisville, Kent State and Purdue before he was promoted at App State in 2019.
Clark led the Mountaineers to three bowl game victories, a Sun Belt Conference title and to a signature win in 2022 when App State defeated No. 6 Texas A&M in College Station. Clark left App State in December and had been an assistant coach this year at Central Florida near Orlando.
Current University of Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar began his career in Boone when Clark was head coach.
