Sheriff’s Office reports alleged car thief caught in Russell County

A string of stolen cars including two in Russell County led to the arrest of a Salem, Virginia man. Ernest Scott Barton, 48, reportedly crashed in one of the vehicles found in the town of Cleveland. The other vehicle was stolen from a residence in Abingdon.

Investigators found Barton at a home in Belfast and he was taken into custody. His charges include: two counts of larceny of a vehicle and one count each of larceny of tools, attempted breaking and entering, buying and receiving stolen property, and grand larceny with intent to sell.
