Damascus VA the latest to end contract with Flock Safety LPR’s
Damascus, Virginia is the latest locality in the Tri-Cities area to pull the plug on its Flock Safety automated license plate readers. In a unanimous six-to-zero vote, the Damascus Town Council decided not to renew its two-year-old surveillance contract. The decision will completely deactivate and bag the town’s three existing cameras. The move follows a wave of public pressure and a growing local petition citing privacy and data security concerns. Damascus now joins roughly two dozen other Virginia municipalities that have recently severed ties with Flock Safety. Local police officials, however, maintained that the cameras served as a highly effective crime-fighting tool.
