Washington County VA School Board considering changes to grade structure
The Washington County Virginia School Board is considering a major shakeup to its grade structures. Currently, the district operates pre-K through eighth-grade facilities, but a new proposal under discussion would separate students into designated kindergarten through fifth-grade elementary schools, and sixth through eighth-grade middle schools. Superintendent Jerry Boyd says a decision could come as early as May or June. If approved, the district plans to give parents a one-year notice regarding upcoming rezoning and enrollment changes. Boyd noted that while research supports both structures, a dedicated middle school system could offer higher-quality opportunities for all sixth through eighth graders across the county. The board is still actively seeking community feedback before making a final vote.
