Whitewater rafting returns to the Nolichucky Gorge next week
Whitewater rafting in the Nolichucky Gorge is expected to return next week for the first time since Hurricane Helene changed the landscape. Rafting companies have been able to launch in the lower portion of the Nolichucky River, but beginning June 12, they’ll be able to return upstream. The reopening comes as the U.S. Forest Service is expected to finish rebuilding the Poplar, North Carolina boat launch wiped out during the 2024 storm. The rebuild was a lengthy process and required nearly 10,000 tons of rock and 11,000 cubic yards of fill material. Rafting businesses along the Nolichucky recommend booking early if you want to take a trip on the river this summer.
