Air quality test results shut down Washington County, Virginia Courthouse

One of the oldest active courthouses in Southwest Virginia is closed to the public after the results of an air quality study on Friday.

Officials in Washington County said in a statement the closure was out of caution due to the microbial growth identified in samples of the facility’s airflow. The report said air testing resumed on Monday, and current plans are to reopen the courthouse on Thursday if professional treatments work to make the building safe again.

The Abingdon location was first opened in 1828.
