VDOT testing new technology in Buchanan County to reduce animal strikes
New technology being testing in Southwest Virginia will alert drivers when elk are on the move. The Virginia Department of Transportation is testing the new equipment in Buchanan County. The pilot project, in partnership with Virginia Tech, aims to prevent dangerous collisions by using thermal cameras along Route 460 to detect elk and other large wildlife. When an animal is detected, digital message boards will warn drivers in real time. The pilot program will continue through September 2026 and then could expand across Southwest Virginia if it’s a success, potentially reducing crashes with deer and bear as well.
