First cases of dreaded cyclosporsis confirmed in Virginia
The Virginia Department of Health confirms the state’s first case of cyclosporsis-the dreaded parasitic condition that causes extreme diarrhea symptoms that has affected more than 100 people in 17 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
The parasite at the heart of the sickness is spread by consuming contaminated water or food. Ten cases are currently on the books in Virginia while 20 people in the US required hospitalization due to the sickness.
Other symptoms include: loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, gas, nausea, and fatigue.
Recommendations from federal and state officials to limit chances of obtaining cyclosporsis:
– Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking.
– Wash hands carefully with soap and warm water before and after food preparation and after using the bathroom or changing diapers.
– Travelers, especially to tropical areas, should avoid eating raw or undercooked foods or drinking untreated water.
