Copper thieves target telephone lines in Greene County
Copper line thefts across East Tennessee, are leaving residents without vital phone services. Thieves targeting Brightspeed telephone lines, have caused roughly $750,000 in damages across the region. In Greene County alone, ten major thefts have crippled local areas like Fall Branch and Chuckey. Investigators say thieves are using bucket trucks and extension ladders during the late-night hours to strip down sections of wire up to 700 feet long, then selling the stolen metal to scrap yards. Officials warn these blackouts create life-threatening situations by cutting off access to emergency healthcare. If you see suspicious tree-trimming or line work at night, please call the Greene County Sheriff’s Department immediately at 423-638-8663.
